What every parent needs to know about Youth Sparring!

Competition Registration --TBA--

Why Sparring?

We highly encourage students to join the competition team and participate in the next Sparring Competition, as sparring fosters sportsmanship, confidence, respect, and valuable life lessons through both winning and losing.  We prioritize honor, teamwork and humility over winning.  We aim to cultivate perseverance and courage as students strengthen their minds, bodies, and spirits together.  This training is suitable for all skill levels; aggressive students will learn self-control and compassion, while timid students will build assertiveness and confidence.  We understand that sparring can be daunting for parents, but all sessions will be supervised, with participants matched based on age, size, and skill level for safety.  Classes will focus on preparing students for the competition to maximize their chances of success.

Sparring Practice Schedule

Welcome to Modern Warrior Martial Arts!

We will be adding sparring practice to regular classes from Monday to Thursday. Students will participate in basic sparring to learn competition rules, fundamentals, sportsmanship, and safety. Beginners will focus on the basics, while more experienced students will practice advanced techniques.

Additionally, we will offer free, optional Sparring Classes on Friday evenings for those interested in joining the competition team. ***These extra classes are shown in red on the schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please call or text us at 209-664-1712 if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Sparring is designed to simulate competition and help students apply their techniques in a controlled environment. It teaches them to think under pressure, improve their timing, and develop skills that are essential for real-life situations.

Yes, sparring is conducted under strict supervision, and students are matched based on age, size, and skill level to ensure safety. Protective gear is required, and the focus is on learning rather than winning.

Encourage your child to practice regularly and bring their sparring gear to every class. Discuss the importance of sportsmanship and respect for their sparring partners.

It's normal for children to feel apprehensive about sparring. Reassure them that they will be supervised and matched with appropriate partners. Emphasize that sparring is a learning experience, not a competition.

Competing helps students build confidence, learn to handle pressure, and develop valuable life skills such as perseverance and respect for others. It also provides an opportunity to apply what they've learned in a real-world setting.

The next Sparring competition is September 21st, 2024. This event will be located at Turlock High School in the girls Gym. It will be suitable for all skill levels, ages 4-14. For more information about this event and to register your child... Click on the "Competitions" tab at the top of this page.

Sparring will be integrated into regular classes, and additional free sparring classes will be offered on Fridays & Saturdays. Please check with the instructors for exact times. Participation in these classes is encouraged but not mandatory.

Our program prioritizes **sportsmanship, honor, respect, and humility**. We aim to instill these values in students as they learn to work together and support one another in their martial arts journey.

Students are required to wear appropriate **sparring gear**, including gloves, shin guards, headgear, mouth guards, and protective padding. If your child does not have their own gear, you can purchase it at the front desk or they can borrow some from the school, although availability may be limited.
