DISCIPLINE — to study, learn, train, and apply a set of rules or standards to achieve meaningful results.
Discipline is not obedience to someone else’s standards to avoid punishment, it is the ability to correct your own behavior in pursuit of what you believe is right. Discipline is not something others do to you. It is something you do for yourself. Although you can receive knowledge or guidance from many sources, the source of discipline does not come from outside, it comes from within.
Discipline is a key ingredient to mastering any skill set. When practicing martial arts, a highly disciplined student is able to focus their thoughts and actions for hours at a time. Then repeat that practice several days a week for years or even decades.
Discipline is also the foundation for restraint, patience, and respect. It’s not just things that you can do, it’s also about the things that you don’t do. Like, not eating unhealthy foods; or not cutting in line; or not taking advantage of someone with less experience.
Discipline can be used to control emotions and maintain composer in times of great stress or pain. With great discipline, a student can relentlessly pursue their goals despite failures, obstacles or temptations to abandon it.
“Failure is temporary, quitting will make it permanent.”
“Martial arts takes discipline, the first discipline is showing up for class.”
“Dreams get you started… Discipline keeps you going.”
“The distance between dreams and reality is measured in discipline.”
“Discipline weighs ounces, regret weighs tons.”
